<p>I currently own two 99M1’s and one 989M2 and I am always on the lookout for good examples of these great little rifles. My good friend and co-worker Albert also shares the passion for these Marlin’s and he recently found us not one but two near pristine early production 989 M2’s. Both rifles are pre-68 non-serialized firearms. The rifle (1) with the beautiful Tiger striping on the stock was manufactured in 1965, the first year of production. Note the flat end of the stock at the barrel band location. Also note the two small screws on the left side of the receiver. I believe these screws are only on the first year of production rifles. The other rifle (2) was manufactured in 1966 and has the rounded front stock at the barrel band location. The Tiger stripped rifle is in near perfect condition and even has an original factory sticker still on the bottom of the front stock. It’s the best example of a 989M2 I have ever handled or observed. The bluing is flawless and it does not appear to have been disassembled since the screws are in perfect condition. The other rifle is not far behind in overall condition with only a couple of minor stock dings that are hardly noticeable. The bluing on this rifle is also near flawless. Both have the factory rear sight and one magazine each.  I have not disassembled either rifle yet but the bores are bright and shiny on both rifles and mechanically they appear to be in like new condition. We are both thrilled to say the least to have found these rifles.</p><p></p><p><a href="http://s6.photobucket.com/user/jimcope/media/Marlin%20989%20M2/519d6ecd-1e35-4af0-bdaf-98bd61531369_zps1b989f26.jpg.html" rel="external nofollow">[img width=800 height=865]http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y217/jimcope/Marlin%20989%20M2/519d6ecd-1e35-4af0-bdaf-98bd61531369_zps1b989f26.jpg</a></p><p></p><p><a href="http://s6.photobucket.com/user/jimcope/media/Marlin%20989%20M2/d79636c2-278c-4457-bafc-46a4e276b307_zpsf8b8b775.jpg.html" rel="external nofollow">[img width=800 height=671]http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y217/jimcope/Marlin%20989%20M2/d79636c2-278c-4457-bafc-46a4e276b307_zpsf8b8b775.jpg</a></p><p></p><p><a href="http://s6.photobucket.com/user/jimcope/media/Marlin%20989%20M2/a3d7bc07-380a-4ef5-aec3-7873169acf6c_zps82fc9e02.jpg.html" rel="external nofollow">[img width=800 height=752]http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y217/jimcope/Marlin%20989%20M2/a3d7bc07-380a-4ef5-aec3-7873169acf6c_zps82fc9e02.jpg</a></p><p></p><p><a href="http://s6.photobucket.com/user/jimcope/media/Marlin%20989%20M2/5e32fa5e-1677-4276-aa29-0ce9cb538498_zps33dc8f9a.jpg.html" rel="external nofollow"><img src="https://forum.rimfireworld.com/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" alt="5e32fa5e-1677-4276-aa29-0ce9cb538498_zps33dc8f9a.jpg" data-src="http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y217/jimcope/Marlin%20989%20M2/5e32fa5e-1677-4276-aa29-0ce9cb538498_zps33dc8f9a.jpg"></a></p><p></p><p><a href="http://s6.photobucket.com/user/jimcope/media/Marlin%20989%20M2/2273b97f-214f-4baf-98c4-4dc1f50db9f5_zps3e1d66d2.jpg.html" rel="external nofollow">[img width=800 height=600]http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y217/jimcope/Marlin%20989%20M2/2273b97f-214f-4baf-98c4-4dc1f50db9f5_zps3e1d66d2.jpg</a></p><p></p><p><a href="http://s6.photobucket.com/user/jimcope/media/Marlin%20989%20M2/9c17b2d4-6154-40ac-a7be-c80b74cbc327_zps78c07a0b.jpg.html" rel="external nofollow">[img width=800 height=600]http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y217/jimcope/Marlin%20989%20M2/9c17b2d4-6154-40ac-a7be-c80b74cbc327_zps78c07a0b.jpg</a></p><p></p><p></p><p><a href="http://s6.photobucket.com/user/jimcope/media/Marlin%20989%20M2/e6988da2-7c83-4c85-a654-6a052fdc05de_zpsf41494aa.jpg.html" rel="external nofollow">[img width=800 height=469]http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y217/jimcope/Marlin%20989%20M2/e6988da2-7c83-4c85-a654-6a052fdc05de_zpsf41494aa.jpg</a></p>

<p>I finally found a 989M2 (1973 manufacture date) to go with my two 99M1's. Purchased it in a private sale. Original rear sight came with the rifle. Came with two 7 round blued mags. Rifle is in VG mechanical shape overall, stock is great looking with a nice figure to the wood with no crack, splits or dings. The bluing on the barrel is thin and a previous owner removed the finish from the receiver and trigger guard so I may Duracoat the metal matte black. It was super dirty so I spent 3 hours and did a complete strip down and inspection and it cleaned up nicely. Bolt buffer was in good shape. The rifle also came with a vintage Weaver K6 (El Paso) scope that is in good shape. I will not use a scope on this rifle but I may have a place for it on another host.</p><p></p><p><a href="http://s6.photobucket.com/user/jimcope/media/Marlin%20989%20M2/d21a32de-6da5-4508-892c-b2e4b80d1dc7_zps5e576749.jpg.html" rel="external nofollow">[img width=800 height=565]http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y217/jimcope/Marlin%20989%20M2/d21a32de-6da5-4508-892c-b2e4b80d1dc7_zps5e576749.jpg</a></p>

I masked off the textured areas on the grip and foregrip, painted with the Krylon "Deep Forest Green", then removed the masking and coated the whole stock with clear rubberized coating.</p><p>I gotta say I like how it turned out.  ;D</p><p>I'm gonna keep it put away for at least a couple more weeks to make sure the coatings have a chance to cure, then I'm gonna give it some torture testing with duct tape to see if the coating adheres to the paint after duct tape is ripped off, then maybe some gun cleaner to see if it will stand up to that.</p><p>If it passes those tests then I'll probably leave it as is, if not I have 4 colors of Alumahyde2 coming to play with. </p><p><a class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image" href="https://forum.rimfireworld.com/uploads/monthly_06_2013/post-1157-144124389057.jpg" rel="external nofollow"><img src="https://forum.rimfireworld.com/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" data-fileid="5617" alt="post-1157-144124389057_thumb.jpg" data-src="https://forum.rimfireworld.com/uploads/monthly_06_2013/post-1157-144124389057_thumb.jpg" width="100" data-ratio="47"></a></p><p><a class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image" href="https://forum.rimfireworld.com/uploads/monthly_06_2013/post-1157-14412438906.jpg" rel="external nofollow"><img src="https://forum.rimfireworld.com/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" data-fileid="5618" alt="post-1157-14412438906_thumb.jpg" data-src="https://forum.rimfireworld.com/uploads/monthly_06_2013/post-1157-14412438906_thumb.jpg" width="100" data-ratio="75"></a></p><p><a class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image" href="https://forum.rimfireworld.com/uploads/monthly_06_2013/post-1157-144124389064.jpg" rel="external nofollow"><img src="https://forum.rimfireworld.com/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" data-fileid="5619" alt="post-1157-144124389064_thumb.jpg" data-src="https://forum.rimfireworld.com/uploads/monthly_06_2013/post-1157-144124389064_thumb.jpg" width="100" data-ratio="75"></a></p>

<p>I recently picked up a new Marlin XT-22 bolt action. I'm looking to do a tactical sniper type build on it but the availablility of aftermarket furniture for it is pretty limited. I have found some custom stocks from Boyds which look pretty nice but I'm lookin for a more agressive look. I have seen posts around from someone who installed the XT-22 into a modified airsoft AICS L96 stock. This setup looks great and would love to find something like it. <a href="http://www.ar15.com/mobile/topic.html?b=6&amp;f=11&amp;t=370367" rel="external nofollow">http://www.ar15.com/mobile/topic.html?b=6&amp;f=11&amp;t=370367</a></p>

I played around with this thing a while and decided to do the relatively simple modification to the stock and drop in my Marlin 795 barrel/receiver. The 795 factory stock for those who are not familiar is a lightweight thin polymer Monte Carlo style. This setup has a pistol grip and allows me to install a rail on the bottom of the fore end and install a Magpul AFG2. It took about an hour going slowly with the Dremel to modify the stock to accept the 795 receiver but it work out perfectly and fits snugly and looks like it was made for the rifle. It handles quickly and is very lightweight in this configuration. It should make a great Rimfire 2 gun match rifle. I also installed a combo front sling swivel/bi-pod rail adapter at the front of the stock so I can use a bi-pod if desired since I may scope it at some point. I love an inexpensive "build". This cost me nothing since the stock was free and I already had the other parts in my parts bin.</p><p></p><p><img src="https://forum.rimfireworld.com/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" alt="IMG_06392-1.jpg" data-src="http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y217/jimcope/Marlin%20795/IMG_06392-1.jpg"></p><p></p><p><img src="https://forum.rimfireworld.com/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" alt="IMG_06422-1.jpg" data-src="http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y217/jimcope/Marlin%20795/IMG_06422-1.jpg"></p><p></p><p></p>

I added Tech sights for the Appleseed and then decided I would mount an inexpensive BSA red dot I had in the parts bins. It has work out really well as a fun plinking setup. The red dot sights make for really quick target acquisition I you can quickly remove them and use the aperture sights if I choose to. Unfortunately the Tech sights will not co-witness through the red dot (red dot sits too high on the scope rail) but its still a nice versatile sight setup for this fun plinker.</p><p></p><p><img src="https://forum.rimfireworld.com/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" alt="IMG_0267.jpg" data-src="http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y217/jimcope/Marlin%20795/IMG_0267.jpg"></p><p></p><p><img src="https://forum.rimfireworld.com/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" alt="IMG_0265-2-1.jpg" data-src="http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y217/jimcope/Marlin%20795/IMG_0265-2-1.jpg"></p>
