  1. Well dang, I had fun and sure appreciated the effort on your part! Some people take doing something fun to seriously!

    Ruger 77/22

Let the Scope mounting fun began! In hopes of avoiding the Savage Scope mounting fiscal Shortly after the pictures were taken last night, I peeled a beat up 3x9 Tasco off of a equally beat up browning 308 just to take a look at mounting, clearance etc. Well...with the rings that came with the rifle the bolt did not clear the scope, It would be my guess that any scope that is going to make me happy is not going to clear. Disappointed, I really liked the stainless rings and was hoping to be able to use them and save some money. After looking up the cost of Ruger stainless rings, and having a fear of having to purchase more then one set while trying to make some scope fit, I changed course and just ordered a Weig-A-Tinny mount with rings, all in silver. At least if I have to play with ring heights, not going to end up with rings that can't be used else where. Little concerned about the comb height and the tall scope mounting. So much for the Scope Budget...scope might need to wait a week or two!

Thanks for the tip on the Colibre, have my very first 22, a Sears & Roebucks Model 1 (Winchester 101 I think it is) The Colibre might be fun in that one! My main intent with this rifle is a Hunter Class Small Bore Silhouette Rifle and if I shoot better with it then I do with my Savage, I would use it in the standard class also! I have found what has been a reliable source of the Fiocchi sub sonics, 6 bricks in 4 trips to this store! Chances are I will stick with the Fiocchi for now until they can not get it any more or I find a reliable source of some type of ammo that shoots better! But for now, it has been kinda cool to run the same ammo through a few different rifles and systematically start creating a data base of my different rifles and their set ups!

    Ruger 77/22

I tried one more time to talk myself out of it, wandered the store for a few minutes...didn't work. For a 14 year old rifle. Its in very nice shape. As far as personal taste, the stock is a take it or leave it choice. But the stainless is sharp looking. The bolt and receiver seems to be one of the most solid 22 bolt actions I have looked at and pretty much made the sale for me. The whole rifle just seem to be very well built. It was tagged as having a Timney Trigger, Feels nice. I do not have a trigger pull scale. (yet) Weight feels very similar to my Savage Accutrigger on my BSEV (still at the factory settings) I think it has less creep and breaks a little more consistent then the savage after pulling both while side by side a few times. But I am far from being a trigger expert, still learning. But the trigger is night and day better then my new 10/22 or any of the rest of the rifles in my 22 collection. Looking at a couple of silver scopes, but need to keep the budget in check(for now). Leaning towards a Mueller 4.5-14x40mm AO APV, one of those can be on the door step for under 140.00 Once it's Scoped, I will give it some side by side testing against some of my other toys!

    Ruger 77/22

well...I about had myself talked out of this rifle, but 1. Just watched a blue version of this rifle on Gun Broker with a cheap scope fetch 150.00 more then what I can get this rifle for....and I am a sucker for stainless! 2. My Birthday is coming up, wife walked in the shop tonight, told her I was going to skip it, she offered me a couple hundred towards it as a birthday present. 3. Thinking I can lend it to a real good friend for a few matches to encourage him to be my partner at the silhouette matches. He is having a rough go lately and it would be good for him to get out and do a little something fun. Maybe this would twist his arm a little. Might just make it mine in the morning!
  6. wondering,,,,,second annaul Tactical 22 posatal match?

    Ruger 77/22

Thanks for the info! I still have not made any decisions, I have the rifle on hold, for me its not really a either or situation, but for some reason I have been resistant to the CZ's and Anschutz, but warming to the idea as I start to get more open to the idea of bolt action 22's at those price points...the CZ's seem to be reasonably priced, but a new Anschutz prices have me in sticker shock!

    Ruger 77/22

This one is used, I always find stainless attractive, this one has the timney hammer and spring in it, didn't have any snap caps so I did not dry fire it. do like the bolt as compared to any of my other 22's. Have yet to stumble across a Anschutz or even a CZ any where so I could just take a look!
  10. Hi, anybody have any experience with Ruger's 77/22? Saw a used one yesterday, stainless all weather with the boat paddle stock with green inserts. the asking price was 500.00 not really something I need, but have been considering a tapered barrel bolt action 22 for the silhouettes for the hunter class (didn't know the bull barrel on my savage would not be legal) and my 10/22 requires a deflector so I am not ejecting on the guy next to me! Thoughts?
  11. Diving in, Savage has yet to see any new parts, been busy with some different development work hoping to expand on a product line that is showing a few signs of life (race car parts and such) but...I have managed a few trips out shooting, The savage gave me my first ever sub MOA 5 shot group at 100 yards. Hoping to get the heavy duty bottom metal plates cut soon, will see. Did get to shoot a small bore silhouette match last weekend, two rounds, 13/60 first round, 12/60 second round. long way to go to be any good but it was my first goal to break 10!

    cool!!
  13. Welcome! have a 15-22 in my collection!
  14. I have got to stay out of the gun/sports stores! lol But I guess its only fitting that 22 number 10 be a 10/22. I had read about the 50th Anniversary design Contest and once I actually stumbled across one in a store, just had to own it! Mounted the cast off 3x9 BSA from my Savage MKII on it and took it out! Not disappointed at all. Did a 5 group, 5 shot test, although I am shooting much more consistent with the Savage...I did manage my best 5 shot, 50 yard group "ever" first time out with this rifle!
  15. Not to much to report on the manufacture of my own bottem plates, have the programs wrote, holding fixture made. Just need to find some free time to load it all in the CNC. Trying to find a source of action screws and wood screws that would all have matching heads has not gone well. I did have a little trigger time at my personal range to try to establish a new base line using the 6x18 scope. Was able to reset a 50 yard baseline. a screw up with turrets and scope setting threw my 100 yard attempt out the window. Will need to revisit the 100 yard group test before moving forward with any changes! 50 yards with the 6x18 vs the 3x9 did show improvement Shot 5 groups, 5 shots each at 50 yards, good light, afternoon, small amount of wind from time to time. front rest, rear bag. Largest 1.226 inch .786 improvment Smallest .826 inch .045 improvment Avarage 1.004 inch .29 improvment
  16. Thanks! I just put the lapping tool together on a whim, made two locations for the handle. Have not done any bedded on this rifle, or any other...yet. Have been reading tons about pillar and action bedding and know that will be in my future. I want to test the different bottom plates before doing so.
  17. A bunch of different things have conspired to keep me away from taking the Savage out and creating a new baseline, those same things have also kept me away from getting my new bottom plate machined out, but thought I would share a screen shot of the CAD Drawing, this drawing is actually a composite drawing that has locations on it for two different bottom plates and locations for the fixture to hold the new plates during the machining process.
  18. I had never lapped a set of scope rings before, but can completely understand the reasons why. Made myself a 1 inch lapping tool. Lapped in the rings, leveled the action, leveled the scope, decided on some baseline torque settings and put it all back together!
  19. After reading stuff and seeing some early markings starting to show up on the bolt, using some mandrel mounted stones by hand a little 320 sand paper, knocked down all the sharp edges on the receiver
  20. One of the trips out with the MK II was to a 100 yard range, I was not unhappy with the results, provided good practice but it became apparent I would struggle with the 3-9 at that distance. When I purchased the Rifle I had also purchased a 6.5 x 20 Vortex, but when bench rest shooting Silhouette's I was very happy with the BSA's 40 grain turret and decided to go ahead and try a BSA 6x18 AO and see if I was able to get similar results. So the Vortex stays on the back burner and the new BSA is getting mounted up using a set of Durasight DS 400s rings.
  21. Doing this on rimfire central also! I thought I would create a thread chronicling my attempts to personalize my Mk II 22lr and share the results as I try to apply information and theory's developed from information shared by others through forums, reading and conversation! I purchased this Rifle New, First scope mounted was a BSA 3x9 AO Have Taken it out 3 times, but for the purpose of this thread I will report on 5 shot groups and only did that the first time I had it out Sighting it in. Shot 5 groups, 5 shots each at 50 yards, very poor light, after sun set, front rest rear bag. Largest 2.012 inches (first rounds fired through the rifle) Smallest .871 inches Average 1.294 inches
  22. Neat! looking forward to a report on how well it runs and shoots!
  23. I have never done a pillar bedding and it looks like my new Savage MKII is a great candidate, even though I am giving very strong consideration to a different stock. Any way, My Mark II has 3 action lugs and only two are being used, first question would be do all MKII's have three lugs? and is there any reason not to pillar in all three? the unused action lug is the one with the screw driver pointed at it. Going to post this over on Rimfire Central also to see what kinda answers I get!
  24. tis was a good day, youngest daughter cam home from Kuwait today for the summer, oldest daughter is looking pretty pregnant with our first grand baby! had a nice pork roast family lunch! Happy Fathers Day to all the dads here!
