But i need help with my term paper...
-
Well I finally got the new remmy all dressed and ready for some range time. After a bit of massaging to the recoil lug area and a bedding job the barreled action sits pretty well squared to the stock and barrel channel. This was my first bedding job and I could have done a better job prepping the areas where the bedding compound (JB weld) was thinnest. The JB weld broke out around the ejection port and a couple other spots around the edges of the action. Is seams to be pretty solid around the recoil lug and bedding block so should be OK. If not I'm not afraid to sandblast the stock and do it over. (Just dont wanna if I dont need to) After the bedding I gave the stock 4 medium coats of Alumahyde II. I let air dry for a week then got impatient and built a hot box and baked it for 2 more days @ about 120F. I reassembled it Sunday night and tool some pics. Gotta say I like the FDE (coyote tan alumahyde) and black together. I was planning to fill the area of the stock that held the integrated folding bi-pod but decided to leave it for now and see how it holds up. I found during reassembly that the magazine doesnt release from the stock very smoothly because it has some sharp edges on the front seam where the metal was spot welded so I'm gonna smooth it out with an abrasive disc and re-blue it.

I'm using alumahyde II which calls for 70F but I wanna run it at 90-100f. The waterheater thermostat has a 90-125f range or so.

Slow day at work today so I used a bit of scrap 1/2" plywood and some 2x2's and started building a hot box to bake on gun finishes. Tomorrow I'm gonna pick up some foil lined foam insulation and 3-4 lightbulb bases and wire it up to a hot water heater themostat to control the temp. It measures roughly 48" long X 12" wide X 24" tall on the outside with 1-1/2" thick walls. Hoping that some 100w floodlights will heat it pretty well and a couple 110v fans inside should keep the temp inside fairly uniform. Gonna use this to speed up the cure process on my new stock for my Rem700 sps 308 as well as a few other paint/camo projects I've been itchin to get started.

Got up to 'bout 55 here in Spokane today. Not often we're warmer than Florida

Great article. Thanx :thumb:

best color match i've seen is brownells coyote tan alumahyde II. I've used it a couple times now and the color is great. way better match than duracoat FDE. Downside is it takes 2 weeks to dry completely. I used some over the weekend to spray the new stock for my rem700sps 308. Cant wait to get it reassembled ;D

I've only seen FDE mags for the 15-22 made by Plinker tactical. Last i checked the had some at Midwayusa.com http://www.midwayusa.com/product/3306342099/plinker-tactical-magazine-s-and-w-m-and-p-15-22-22-long-rifle-35-round-polymer?cm_vc=ProductFinding

Well I went ahead and purchased the Archangel Precision Stock for the Rem700. After a test fit of the stock to the barreled action, I noticed the barrel isn't centered in the channel. This was an issue that others had discussed in reviews I've read. I found that the area of the recoil lug was where the bind was coming from so I removed a bit of material from the stock on the left side of the recoil lug area. I have bedded the stock with JB weld from the tang at the rear of the action up about 1" beyond the recoil lug. This was my 1st attempt at bedding so hopefully I did everything correctly.(Thanx Youtube) The stock came with an aluminum bedding block so the platform should be pretty stable. Gonna wait til Monday after work to remove the barreled action from the stock. I wanted to take some before and after pics but forgot to take the before shots. The stock was designed with an integrated bipod which received alot of complaints from others and seems pretty flimsy to me so I plan on filling in the area and attaching a regular bipod via swivel stud or possibly pic rail.

I've only ever seen 2 choices: the OEM M&P 15-22 that come in 10 and 25 round versions, or the Pinker Tactical 35 round mags. I believe promag discontinued the 32 round mag they once made. Cost wise the OEM 25rd mags can be found on MidwayUSA for $17.29 but are on backorder. Locally i can find them for about $20-$23 depending on seller. The Plinker Tactical mags go for $30 on MidwayUSA and are currently in stock and available in black, FDE and OD. These mags sell locally for about $35 in my area. I dont have any experience with the Plinker Tacticals but have read mixed reviews on them. So i would recommend the OEM mags cuz of the price savings and the 8 of them i own have been reliable. I will probably buy at least 1 of the Plinker Tacticals to try out at some point. Just my 2 cents :thumb:

Picked up the Rem 700SPS Varmint 308 from layaway yesterday and ordered a Millett 4-16X50 tactical scope from Opticsplanet. Should receive it by friday next week. this will be by far the most I've spent on a rifle and scope so I'm looking forward to taking it out this spring to try some long range shooting.

Uncle Sam was good enough to return some of the money I loaned him last year so I was able to rescue my newest pet from my favorite LGS. Remington 700 SPS Varmint 308 :sniper: So far I've ordered a Millett 4-16 x 50 scope and rings. I'm trying to make up my mind on which stock/chassis to get. The 2 options I'm weighing are the MDT LLS chassis which accepts AR style grips, adjustable stocks and AI detachable mags. http://mdttac.com/lss-chassis-remington-700.html Or the Promag Archangel precision stock which isnt as versitile but includes a 10rnd detachable mag.http://promagindustries.com/remington/400-archangel-precision-stock-for-the-remington-700.html From what I've read sofar the Promag is a pretty solid unit but will require some cleanup of the molding seams from production. The Promag says it uses a "proprietary magazine" but from some of the reviews I've seen, it appears that std. M1a-M14 mags will work which is a big plus if true due to the price difference between M1a mags and AI mags ($20 vs $70) Whichever way I end up going I'm gonna spray 'em with Alumahyde II, possibly in a camo pattern. I'll put up some pics as I go.

Can't hit the "Broadside of a Barn"!

+1 here for hotter loads at least for the first couple hundred rounds. Mine had issues with the wallyworld federal bulk back when i first bought it but absolutely loved the CCI AR Tactical. I've got probably 1000-1200 round through it now and its alot more forgiving now. I still like the CCI AR Tactical best but it is a bit spendy. The CCI Blazer seams to be the best value for the buck and never had a FTF or FTE with it. But like I said earlier Ive got alot more rounds through it now and with ammo hard to come by I havnt been able to try the bulk federal since. -

My gut tells me to check the muzzle for damage to the crown. If it has a muzzle device like a flash suppressor, make sure its on tight enough. Just my 2 cents  -
Well the good news is you can heat your home by burning the water from your faucet http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWIJ8TgfyrI
