  1. I have read on this forum (and others) that some folks experience "stove-pipes" and failures-to-feed issues with their guns after installing suppressors. Is there any truth (or reason) for this? If so, is there a common solution?
  2. I just read on another forum that a guy got a NEW Umarex .22lr M4 (or M16, didn't catch which one), and it had SEVERAL new factory upgrades: 1. OPERATING dust cover! 2. 90 degree safety arc (instead of 180) 3. attached fake bolt release (won't fall out) 4. attached bolt buffer (also won't fall out) I wonder how many of these new upgrades will RETROFIT to the older rifles? I really like the 90 degree safety lever, and the working dust cover! Who will be the first to contact Umarex Customer Service to find out?? wonder if these parts are availlable, or will they tell us to "buy a new rifle"?!!
  3. I've actually been shooting INDOORS lately, as it has gotten COOOOOOOOOLD here in Virginia!! My older brother gave me a .22 "bullet trap". That thing is (for lack of a better word) just the SHIT! The longest distance I can shoot inside is about 40 feet from corner to corner, covering three rooms. Using CB's and the REALLY QUIET "Super Colibri's" I don't need ear protection. I've been doing this to sight-in two new scopes I have, from the prone position, and am getting 10-shot groups that are one continuous hole that can be covered with a DIME, in dead-center! I'm really curious to see how this setting translates at 50 to 100 yards with my usual high-velocity ammo! WHEN IT WARMS UP OUTSIDE!! I think it would be really neat if the "bullet-drop compensator" on each scope would zero me back in at these distances. Also, you guys need to brush-up on your spelling and grammar!!! LOL!
  4. I have had really good results in the reduction (near elimination) of misfires due to light strikes after shortening my firing-pin spring. then, when I started shooting CB's and Super-Colibri (super quiet) bullets, I realized how crummy the extractor was, as with these rounds you have to MANUALLY cycle the bolt. I found there was WAY too little spring tension on the extractor! A good STRETCH on the extractor spring helped that a LOT. Now if I need to manually extract a case or a bullet, I have MUCH better results. HOWEVER, since I have disassembled my bolt about three times, I have noticed the tapered pin that holds the bolt halves together has started to "creep" outwards. (to the right, where you can SEE it). A slight bit of Locktite on the pin might solve this, but in my case, I slightly "peened" the right-side hole with a small jewelers flat-blade screwdriver. Problem solved. THEREFORE, I do not recommend needless disassembly of the bolt halves JUST to clean the bolt. I highly recommend for cleaning to just drop the assembled bolt in a container of laquer thinner, or spraying it thoroughly with carburetor cleaner, then re-oil. I have had good results just removing the barrel/bolt housing assembly and giving it a good BLASTING with carb cleaner, letting it dry, and re-oiling the firing pin, extractor, and mainspring. The metal on the top half of the bolt seems to be some really soft shit, so don't over do it!
  5. Thanks for the compliment! I seem to have stumbled on a "winning combination" with the scope, bipod, and vertical forward grip. Once sighted-in, I was able to achieve a quarter-size 10-round group at 30 yds. (the length of my yard) Using the grip to pull hard against my shoulder, and resting firmly on the bipod gave me the most stable shooting scenario so far. I had to modify the scope mount somewhat to get the crosshairs level (pain in the ass), and detach the front sight to remove the "Three Wise Men" from my field of view! It looks like these rifles actually shoot STRAIGHT if you can hold'em STILL! Also, I installed one of those "gadgets" on the charging handle to make it easier to operate with just my left hand. All-in-all, pretty happy with the set-up.
  6. NcStar scope, Leapers bipod, UTG rail gas-block, detachable front sight. Going for that "Sniper" look![tt] [/tt]
  7. Cheaper Than Dirt has a lot of the Umarex/Colt accessories a WHOLE LOT cheaper than Colt does (in most cases), but their crane stock (which is a great part for the price) has NO buffer tube with it. I have seen other manufacturers offering the same stock at more than THREE TIMES the price! I'm thinking maybe they have the tube with them? For $200?? I do know the Umarex tube is held in place by a single screw inside the tube. Don't see how it would interchange with the AR buffer tube which is held on by the big nut. You may have to find a Umarex original receiver extension (buffer tube), and then I believe most mil-spec collapsible stocks would work. I have noticed by the parts diagram that the SPR and the carbine have different part numbers for the lower receivers. Might be more complicated than we think.
  8. Thanks so much for the compliment! I have been in the (independent) Custom Harley-Davidson repair/ accessory/ performance business for over 30 years, and my motto has always been "say what you do. Do what you say...PERIOD). I think it's the main reason I've been able to "hold my own" against the BIG GUYS! Again.......THANKS!
  9. Hey rodent,- have you figured out EXACTLY why the AR15 won't stay shut? Does it have the standard little spring-loaded ball catch? I was looking at these at a gun show, and it looked like they should latch. The only possible problem I could see is the latch mechanism on the cover might be too thick to clear the bolt. Is that what's happening? Could it be filed down to clear? I made the one on mine work by threading a tiny round-headed screw into the sheared-off plastic plunger and shaping it with a Dremel to make it latch. It was quite a job! It's funny how Umarex Customer Service told me the .22 dust cover was NEVER designed to work, and SHE could not send me a part to make it work! I know people who have earlier runs of these rifles, and the dust-cover catch WORKS! Even the (earlier) Owners manual refers to it as FUNCTIONAL! The lady at Umarex also tried to bullshit me into thinking the little "notch" in the top of the ejection port was there to "keep the cover from working"! All ar15 ejection ports have this notch so the little ball in the cover WILL work!! Their claim is the non-functioning dust cover is a "safety feature" so you can keep the little blue plastic "empty-chamber indicator" in place when the rifle is not in use. (lol) do the folks at Umarex think we are all MORONS??
  10. I'm really not too worried about a bullet getting stuck in my M4 Carbine barrel. At 16" long, it doesn't seem too likely, and those little bullets are still screaming pretty good out the muzzle! Of course, one should keep his barrel CLEAN, and be wary of a possible "weak" primer, which could cause a real problem!
  11. Went to the gun show in Richmond (Va.) Saturday and bought a box of Aguila .22 l.r. "super Colibri" ammo. They are propelled by PRIMER ONLY, and have a 20 grain bullet that travels at 500 fps. I am AMAZED at how quiet these things are! NOT as loud as a pellet gun! At 25 yds. they shoot perfectly straight from my Colt M4 Carbine. They will NOT cycle the bolt on a semi-auto (at all). Some of the CB ammo I was using to blast critters in my yard were periodically kicking-back the bolt, causing jams, but the Colibri does not. You just have to manually cycle the bolt. They feed from the magazine just fine. I did stretch the spring a bit on my EXTRACTOR to help with pulling-out the empties from the chamber. The Colt really has a piss-poor extractor that needs a LOT more tension on it! These rounds also penetrate unbelievably well considering what they are. So, if you need QUIET shooting, give these things a SHOT!
  12. Yep. It's gone.
  13. Changed the stock immediately after I bought the rifle. Brand new. Stock only. $25.00 plus freight.
  14. The only thing I don't care for with this handle-mounted scope, as opposed to the rail-mounted NcStar scope is the eye-relief. I have to collapse the stock all the way in order to get close enough to the scope to get a full field of view. The rail-mounted scope in that respect is perfect. Hence, the advantages of flat-top design, I guess.
  15. I do find the red to be too bright in low-light situations, where the green works good for me. However I find the red works well in daylight when I'm aiming at a dark-colored target or in shaded areas. Then again, my eyesight ain't too good either!
  16. Have you ever noticed the illumination on the crosshairs fade in and out when you fire a shot? It looks like mine does that sometimes. Might be dirty contacts in there somewhere. I've been experimenting with the "bullet drop compensator" using some low-velocity CB L.R. Remmington ammo. Seems like that feature might work pretty well with .22's once you figure out the trajectory of the bullet. CB ammo definitely has a "hand grenade" effect at different distances!
  17. One day after a buddy of mine GIVES me a fairly nice carry-handle mounted scope for My Colt M4, I get a brand new NcStar Mark III "Tactical" 4x32 Weaver-mounted scope that I won online for $60 and free freight. I have read a LOT of conflicting reports on this scope, but for the money, I figured "what the hell". Well it turns out this thing ain't bad! And it's got some neat features the reviews don't mention (nor does the manual.) For one, the "quick-release" mounting lever is REVERSIBLE, so the lever doesn't get in the way of the charging handle when bringing the scope closer to the eye. The other nifty treat is the "open turret" windage knob can be "zeroed back" by loosening the set screw, pulling off the knob, and putting "0" back on top. I had the thing zeroed in less than 10 shots, and it has held zero after repeated removals and re-attaches. And the lighted reticles aren't overly bright except in the dark. Also, you CAN actually see a "shadow" of the front sight thru the scope without a riser block, but it isn't too noticeable. All in all, it seems like a very nice scope for the money! Any other opinions out there?
  18. Just finished zeroing it in @ 25yds. Had to screw with the elevation a bit, but she's dead-on now! Pretty good for FREE, huh?
  19. Got it earlier today. Definitely NOT military issue! Best I can tell, it's a Leapers 4x20. Story I got today was: "These [military] guys bought them because they didn't like what they had." Sounds like B.S. to me, but IT WAS STILL FREE!! And it works!
  20. Maybe you can get an idea of how neat this stock is from these. Notice the rubber hose (about 6" long) that's holding the tools. One on each side!
  21. Ugh.....OK! If it's not worth more than a thousand dollars, I'll send it to you to throw away for me!
  22. Got a buddy of mine who used to be in the (recent) Miltary who claims to have a "military-issue?" ACOG-STYLE scope for the carry-handle of an M4! Haven't seen it yet, but what do you think it might be? He doesn't have a rifle to put it on, so he doesn't need it. Good thing is, my Colt has the removable carry handle! Think I oughta chase him down and try to get this thing? Says somebody gave it to him. Could it be one of them HIGH-DOLLAR jobs?
  23. Wonder it you could take the original "spring-pin" and FLATTEN-OUT the big end (or "peen" it on the end) until it fits SNUG in the hole? Just experiment until it needs to be "tapped" in there. Maybe then you could keep the same spring? Haven't tried it, but just a thought,
  24. I looked in "all programs" and found only "Wordpad". I can open the file, get text and a bunch of "gobbledegoop"n no graphics. Can I download Microsoft Word? UPDATE! I searched the web and found "Microsoft Word Viewer 2003", installed it, selected it as default for .doc files, and it WORKED! DAMN, I'M GETTING GOOD AT THIS!!! I'm finally learning how to werk a kumpooter!....with a little help from you guys!
