imschur Posted March 3, 2011 Report Posted March 3, 2011 So as a project for the site Ive been wanting to build a custom 10/22 tack driver. I was planning on buying a cheap model and replacing everything. Then I stumbled across this at Brownells. While it is pretty pricey it's actually a wash with what I had planned and maybe even a tad cheaper (and done right) All it needs is a stock...Im seriously considering this unless someone tells me something else like a Volquartsen is much better.
Microgunner Posted March 4, 2011 Report Posted March 4, 2011 Can't speak for the Clark Custom 10/22 barreled action, never seen one but have always heard good about them, but I can speak of the Volquartsens. I own (2), a .17HM2 and a .22lr, both standard versions, and they really shine. I was a little leery of spending this much at first but the second quickly followed the first. What I first perceived as "spendy" now seems like a complete bargain.
asmurff Posted March 4, 2011 Report Posted March 4, 2011 I'm sure I could never do justice to a custom target set-up like that, but the price isn't really out there, I've got that much tied up in my 10/22 with the cost of rifle, trigger, stock and scope. Plus while mine is very accurate I'd never call it a tack driver, I've got it set up to rapidly engage 4-10 inch targets between 25 and 50 yards.
imschur Posted March 5, 2011 Author Report Posted March 5, 2011 I may just do this at the end of the month... I like the 1/2moa 50 yard guarantee
Microgunner Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 Cool. When you do make sure you bed your stock. 10/22s absolutely require bedding to achieve their optimal performance.
imschur Posted April 26, 2011 Author Report Posted April 26, 2011 Do I need to put in writing what I just did :-[
imschur Posted April 28, 2011 Author Report Posted April 28, 2011 Well nobody cares so ill tell you anyway. I should have the barreled action in my possession tomorrow
imschur Posted April 28, 2011 Author Report Posted April 28, 2011 Im struggling to find a nice left handed stock. Any suggestions?
Microgunner Posted April 28, 2011 Report Posted April 28, 2011 I'm particularly fond of the Bell & Carlson Anschutz style 3 position stocks. I believe they're offered in a lefty version.
imschur Posted April 28, 2011 Author Report Posted April 28, 2011 Thats EXACTLY what I want but my experience with their stuff has been hit or miss. McMillan has one too but its like $550
Microgunner Posted April 28, 2011 Report Posted April 28, 2011 I've purchased two of the B&C stocks and both were properly molded, were easy to bed and fit perfectly.
imschur Posted April 28, 2011 Author Report Posted April 28, 2011 I've purchased two of the B&C stocks and both were properly molded, were easy to bed and fit perfectly.Good to know. im gonna do it. Do you have info on bedding?
imschur Posted April 28, 2011 Author Report Posted April 28, 2011 also are the non thumbhole stocks ambi?
Microgunner Posted April 28, 2011 Report Posted April 28, 2011 also are the non thumbhole stocks ambi?Their non-thumbhole 3 position stocks are not ambidextrous. You must specify your preference. I follow the instructions on the box for bedding. On 10/22s you'll need to bed about the first 1-2 inches of the barrel to avoid barrel droop due to the barrel being a clamp mount. Old 10/22s and Volquartsens have screw in barrels but it's still advised to bed the first inch or so of the barrel due to the 10/22 having only one action screw. This is assuming you'll be floating the barrel. I also pillar bed my stocks to avoid stock compression and maintain proper action screw torque. This may sound complicated but it's really very easy and fun. Just take your time.
imschur Posted April 28, 2011 Author Report Posted April 28, 2011 Im not finding a left hand option on any of those. The BC site doesnt offer much info. I could probably search better if "The Man" wasnt hovering around my cubicle ;D
Microgunner Posted April 28, 2011 Report Posted April 28, 2011 I couldn't find any info on their website either so I called them. They're all right hand only except for the Classic which is anbidextrous. I guess they think south paws shouldn't own firearms.
Microgunner Posted April 28, 2011 Report Posted April 28, 2011 A quick Google search revealed that Revolution and Fajen both offer left hand 10/22 target stocks.
imschur Posted April 28, 2011 Author Report Posted April 28, 2011 I saw the Fajen. Revolution is new to me.I have n email in to these guys too http://www.richardsmicrofitstocks.com/
Microgunner Posted April 28, 2011 Report Posted April 28, 2011 Man, I've read many a horror story about Richards Micro Fit Stocks. They come partially inletted so they can be professionally fitted by the end user. This requires a serious set of skills, which you may possess being a woodworker. Many a folk have butchered theirs up.
imschur Posted April 28, 2011 Author Report Posted April 28, 2011 Good to know. Im a very good woodworker but Im not looking for that kind of stock. Unfinished would be fine.
Microgunner Posted April 28, 2011 Report Posted April 28, 2011 Yep, I prefer drop in stocks which I then bed. Easy, fun and effective.
imschur Posted April 28, 2011 Author Report Posted April 28, 2011 I ended up buying this. The price clobbered everyone else.
