Ruger or Remington?

I am looking for my first "tactical 22" right now. The selection here in Canada is limited, some of these rifles are classified as "restricted firearms" (Colt AR15, Sig 522 for example). I am licenced to buy restricted, it is just complicated to handle them here. I am not allowed to shoot them in the woods (clubs only), and for transportation I need permits.

So - my choice will be one of the 2 "non rectricted" models, Ruger SR-22 or Remington 597 VTR.

I checked them both in a store today, can't really tell which one I like better...... Looking at the price, and knowing that the Ruger 10/22 is THE legendary rimfire-rifle, the Ruger might be my first choice. The sales-guy told me that their customers never complained about the SR-22, but  they had complains about the 597 VTR.....

Now - a 150 dollar price-difference is something (for example a Bushnell Red Dot scope) - and Ellwood Epps has a used 597 right now for $ 279.00.... - what do you guys think? Definitely go with the Ruger? Or is the Remington a good choice as well?

I'd vote SR-22 because it is based on the 10/22 a reliable semi-auto rifle. With lots of upgrades and parts availibility. I don't know much about the 597 line, one of the guys I shoot Tactical Rimfire with has one, the very base model. He had a few break-in issues and they appear to be ammo finicky, not sure about after market magazines and such.

I own a 597 VTR and it's a pretty good rifle but the SR-22 is better. I only bought the VTR because I was bored and wanted something new to play with. Now, don't get me wrong, the 597 VTR is a very accurate rifle, as good as if not better than the Ruger, but the Ruger just has so much going for it in the form of aftermarket support.
