Hi guys,

I've just joined a new club over here in the UK that does a lot of practical shotgun competitions. I've got all the paperwork to change my license (that's what we have to do over here) to include a shotgun but I'll have to specify the action. So, pump action of semi auto?

I don't have a massive budget but the two I'm eyeing up are the Benelli Supernova with the steady grip or a Hatsan Escort MPA 24. The Benelli's a pump but the Hatsan is a semi auto.

Usually I think the Benelli would take it but as practical shooting's about speed I'm thinking semi auto. Does anyone do practical shooting? Does it make a lot of difference?

I'm confused. Any help would be welcome.

Cheers

As a bit past novice shotgunner, I carried a Remington 870 (great gun) in the Air Force for many years & I prefer pumps for the following reasons.

-Generally cheaper

-Ease of operation

-Ease of maintenance

-Usually not picky about ammo

-Also my choice for home defense gun

I personally like the Mossberg 500 series because there is so much after-market accessories for it. Likewise I like 870, just haven bought one yet. I couldn't give you a reason not to go with a Benelli Supernova, except a bit pricey for me, I've shot one an it is an excellent gun. I know nothing about the escort line.

Thanks Mr Asmurff,

I had also been looking at an 870 and a Mossberg 590. We don't seem to get the 500 over here in the UK.

I think I came to the same conclusion last night. Pump action it is. This will be my first shotgun believe it or not. And I think that the extra interaction you have with a pump will add to the fun. Not to mention I'll have far more choice.

Cheers

Hey Glowin, I have an 870 clone, a Pardner Pump by NEF. Just got done putting a recoil reducing stock and heat shield on it. I agree with Mr. Smurff, pump for reliability. 870 or Mossy 500 for lots of accessories.

Good luck with the paperwork!
