imschur Posted November 11, 2009 Report Posted November 11, 2009 Anyone here have experience with one of these? Is it simply a barrel change on a .22 mag 10-22?
Microgunner Posted November 12, 2009 Report Posted November 12, 2009 You also have to change the recoil spring and add mass to the bolt in the form of a heavier bolt handle. Timing is critical with this very snappy caliber and you need to slow the bolt to insure no OOB ignition which can result in a ruptured case. Which in turn can result in a magazine going KABOOM. If the bolt begins to open too fast (which it would with just a barrel change) you will expose unsupported brass while the bore is still under pressure. Approach these conversions carefully. It's best to buy a complete kit from one provider to insure properly matching parts.
asmurff Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 So for us laymen is there a drop-in kit we can do, or is this gunsmith stuff.
Microgunner Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 This round is so volatile in semi-autos it prompted Remington to issue this warning. http://www.remington.com/safety/17_HMR_Ammo_notice/default.asp
