General question on target shooting/accuracy/consistancy
techmike replied to techmike's topic in General Talk
Looking forward to seeing them! TM -
Doesn't get any better than those instructions... :thumb: TM PS Unless the scope is WAY off, and won't hit paper... In that case, I shoot at something on the berm or backstop to see where it's hitting.

Now that's a great idea! Actually, I will set up my vid camera on the next bench and critique myself. :thumb: Thanks Drew! TM -
Question about the Umarex compensator
techmike replied to ellie_18's topic in Colt Umarex Mods and Upgrades
Yeah, looks like you called it Ellie_18 - looking in the muzzle end of the comp shows many ridges in the tube, and nicks in the crown. Guess Colt will be getting an e-mail. TM -
General question on target shooting/accuracy/consistancy
techmike replied to techmike's topic in General Talk
I have tried many different targets, shapes and colors. I seem to get the best results with the black circle on white paper. (Plus they are the cheapest to print) Unfortunately, my club only allows shooting at paper. I would love to shoot some reactive targets..... It's got to be something mental, but I don't know what. Question about the Umarex compensator
techmike replied to ellie_18's topic in Colt Umarex Mods and Upgrades
Well, I just bought one from Colt/Umarex, wish I had got it from C.T.D., (half price), and it has a very high look-cool factor, it covers up all of the contours on the barrel. However, it adversely affected accuracy on my M-4 big time. TM -
OK, here is the setup... known accurate rifle, consistent ammunition, bench rest, paper targets at 50 yards. On any given day, shooting 3 shot strings, I can get 1 ragged hole, dime sized groups, quarter sized groups, or worse. (wind is not a variable) Yet, when shooting the same bench, everything the same,.. but at a non-paper target, perfect shots. Example, today I could not get better than quarter sized groups on paper. Then I set a 12 ga hull on the ground under the target, and put the first round thru the center of the brass. What am I doing wrong with paper targets??? TM

Hey Mr. Pint, If you don't want to ever have to deal with that spring again....Go Here TM  -
So here is hoping you get your Colt on Tuesday! By comparison, this is how I acquired my Colt..... Saw it on gunblast.com, went to gallery of guns, ordered one and payed $170, it was shipped overnight from out west to Ohio, and I picked it up the next day at a local gun shop, after paying the remainder of the price. I have found a guy in Arkansas that makes custom brakes (IN the USA) for a very reasonable price. Some of his brakes sell for less than $20. I have contacted him, and he will make a brake to fit any gun. I am going to send him my Colt's original compensator and order a brake that will thread right on the Colt so I do not have to use the thread adapter. Find his work HERE. TM

Sounds like a fun day - I also have noticed that my Colt has "worn in" and is much fun to shoot. Especially with that trigger job Bill did for me. TM :thumb:

It is kinda unique, a party island in Ohio, with a resident population, some very wealthy. One takes the ferry, or the Jet Express, and then we rent a golf cart for the day. A real good perch, or walleye dinner, wine tasting, shops, miniature golf, or pub crawling. Will post some pics tomorrow. :thumb: TM

I have been reading some articles on the web, and there is not a lot concerning muzzle brakes and .22lr. Of the ones I read, most were concerned with the tacti-cool factor. There were a few, mostly for Ruger 10-22s, that the authors gave serious effort to quantify the effectiveness of an actual designed-for-.22lr brake. Of course, the placement of the first shot is reliant upon you, your rifle and ammo. It is the subsequent shots that that brake can affect. The results of the authors can be summarized mainly by the following - when using a scope, with a functional brake, you can actually watch your first shot hit the target. The little bump from a .22 is greatly reduced or eliminated. This of course allows for faster and more accurate follow-up shots. Most of the .22 brakes on the market are supplied for the "tacti-cool" market, and are not very effective. http://www.eabco.com/cssmb.html makes the best brakes IMO. I will be contacting them to see if they will make a brake to fit the 1/2"-28 threads of the AR barrel. That would allow use on the Colt/Umarex with the thread adapter device. I will also ask about just using the existing Colt threads. I am also going to try to make one myself, as the required design factors appear to be fairly easy to reproduce. 1. An 11 degree crown inside the brake. 2. An expanded chamber inside the brake. 3. A number of small holes accurately drilled in the brake, aimed 22 degrees back towards the shooter. I will report back with whatever I discover. TM

A rare family outing, once a year we take the ferry over for the day. 8) TM

I have not added a brake to anything except the MAS. And that one works G8. I do know that my Colt/Umarex M4 does have some jump when fired from the bench with a bi-pod. It would be nice to "watch the hit" and stay on target. I have just ordered one of the "compensators" from Colt that ellie_18 has on his M4. I will have to think about doing a "magneport" job on it...... TM

Well, I am going a bit more techy than heron statues. I have collected most of my needed parts. Motion detector, 24 v transformer, 24vac sonalert, and and a 24 v motor that will spin something to startle the beast if it returns. I figure the noise and motion will keep it away. TM PS Agree with Mr. Jones about these evil creatures.

Mmmm. Think USED shotgun and then the Mosquito. Just a thought. TM

It has been an incredibly reliable rifle for me. Zero malfunctions, probably 1k rounds down the pipe. And that was a good article in American Rifleman. Mr. Smurff - let me know how that M1/10-22 works for ya! TM

Let's talk about optics after a day at the range
techmike replied to Mr. Jones's topic in Optics and sights
Very interesting, especially with all the different sighting devices. I have never been fond of a sighting device that DEPENDS on a battery. I also (with tri focals) cannot easily use iron sights. I have used 7 different scopes on my Colt/Umarex, and, for me, finally, have found the ultimate optic. It is designed for a .223 / .308 rifle, but it works great for my little Colt. I will be ordering another for my AR soon. It is a Leatherwood CMR scope. CMR = Close to Medium Range, and is a 1.5 to 4.0 power scope. It has the best reticle for .22 ammunition I have ever used. I am getting less than dime sized groups at 50 yds, also using Federal Bulk ammo. It does have green illumination, and it's not cheap, $250 + shipping, but IMO well worth it! CHECK IT OUT TM
