Michigan Joe
Hello. I am thinking of going on a camping trip up in Michigan's UP. It is pretty empty up there. Thinking of bringing a .22. Any ideas?

Any ideas? Well what do you have access too? or are you looking to pick something up? is this for food? protection or both?

Michigan Joe
I have the sig 522 (picking it up tomorrow), a couple of normal semi auto .22's, (a marlin 60 and a Remington 552), a couple of bolt action .22's, an SKS, 308 Spanish Mauser, various pump, automatic, double barrel shotguns in all gauges, plus handguns, but no CCW. I wanted to have a gun for protection, but do not believe Centerfire rifles are permitted in the woods outside of hunting season, but don't know that as a fact. I thought a 22 would be nice as it would be light. My 870 is a 16 gauge with a shorty barrel and one of those big adjustable chokes on the end of it (deadly for rabbits). I got that one 45 years ago. That's the gun I always kept in the closet for home defense with buckshot shells nearby.
techmike
I believe it would depend on who's land you are camping on. If private, you can probably take anything you want. If it is a public campground, check their rules. You will also find some info HERE. While the bears are still in hibernation, I would at least take a shotgun with a slug barrel.TM
mudpie
Depends on the local wild life. If bears are around, I would take a .308/7.62. But you have a SKS which I assume is a 7.62x39. That will work too. You'd better check with DNR (Game Warden) on the rules and state law. Self defense is different than hunting, but some of the rules for hunting still apply. Microgunner
I'm with asmurff. I believe the perfect camping gun is a .22WMR over a 20 ga. My preference is the Savage 24 series.
imschur
I was hoping he had an AR. I was thinking an AR with Hornady TAP ammo for protection and a .22 conversion for small game and plinking
asmurff
Is the Savage 24 series still made?
21rides2rule
Get a 44mag pistol for protection otherwise prob a shotgun with a slug barrel would be ideal if allowed, otherwise id go with a bolt action 22lr should be accurate, quite(er) and rather light...
