The only uncomfortable front-strap checkering I have is on my Kimber Ten II double-stack 1911. It kind of chews up the supporting fingers a bit. You're right though, it seems you have to go with a custom shop model anymore to get front-strap checkering.
I love 1911's, and that e-series has caught my eye as well. I would get the rounded butt model, probably. But I'm also eye'ing that new Springfield Range Officer model. Congrats on your new pieces!!
