Tal Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 Or..."You can't judge a book by it's cover"Interesting time at the range last night. Light night at the range. Just me and my son to start with. After about 20 minutes, this old skinny hippy looking dude, takes the lane next to us. Beat up old range bag. Pulls out an old, worn, but you can tell meticulously maintained Colt 1911. Then pulls out some cheap steel, no name ammo. Then sets a B17 target at 17 yards.I'm thinking "Yeah...Right"...Holds the gun one handed, (His right), and then fires around 50 rounds. Dead CENTER. You honestly couldn't see at the end but about 3 distinct holes in what was left of the red. Not fast. Just slow deliberate shooting. Really a pleasure to watch a guy like that, when I'm happy with 6 inch patterns at that distance with a 2 handed grip. Could have watched the guy shoot all night.
Tal Posted October 19, 2011 Author Report Posted October 19, 2011 I read "Tal needs a 1911" >:DIt aint the gun. It's the shooter. I've got a sneaky suspicion I could have put my FNP45 in that old skinny, hippies hands, and he would have shot his ass off as well. ;DI've seen some other "Real" shooters up there, but they got the vests with logos, fiddle around adjusting iron sites and bitch when they get off by a quarter inch or so. This guy just didn't look or act like any or those guys. What a pleasure to watch this cat shoot. 8)
lmao_37 Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 Wish i had been there just to watch him shoot i might have learned something ;D
asmurff Posted October 19, 2011 Report Posted October 19, 2011 If he was shooting 1-handed, he probably learned along time ago. I was initially taught to shoot 1-handed in the Air Force circa 1975, when most of the military and law enforcement taught 1-handed. My Grandfather showed me the same way he was a guard at the Baltimore County Jail and trained with the Sheriff's Department.Fancy gear can be bought by anyone, expertise you have to work at, I'm still working. :auto:Bullseye shooters still do I think.
Microgunner Posted October 20, 2011 Report Posted October 20, 2011 Tal, the 1911 has everthing to do with it. The trigger pull on those old 1911s is so smooth and short that great accuracy is far simpler. That's why they're still around after all these years.Until you try a nicely tuned 1911 you'll never know the joy of 1911s. Are they are a joy to shoot.
asmurff Posted October 20, 2011 Report Posted October 20, 2011 I've seen & shot some old military surplus 1911 after receiving the attention of a 1911 Gunsmith Wizard, Sweet. Hey those guys and gals created a whole new industry, even if no one uses the military surplus frames to start from anymore.
imschur Posted October 21, 2011 Report Posted October 21, 2011 Last time I went shooting my best results were with my buddies Kimber 1911. I still sucked, just less
Madhouse Posted October 21, 2011 Report Posted October 21, 2011 My old-ish, loosened-up Kimber 1911 is the best shooter in my safe. I take it with me almost every time I go to the range, and whenever I have a particularly poor session with another pistol I just pull her out and make myself feel better about my shooting. I impress myself every time I use it.So Tal, http://www.kimberamerica.com, jus' sayin'...
