imschur
My local Costco had a pretty nice Winchester Gun Safe for under $500. It was on par with $800-$1000 safes. It doesnt appear to be online. This was a real safe not a cabinet.
Dangermouse
In the UK all guns have to be kept in a gun safe, and ammunition in another. The Police prefer them to be out of site and only the person with the Firearms Certificate is allowed to know where the keys are kept. It is not uncommon to find the safes kept in the roof space / Attic / loft.I have been up there a lot over the last month, what with hiding the Christmas presents and getting the Christmas decorations down, and have been worried about the cold temperature.I wonder what the temperature changes do to the guns and scopes?I have not had them out for a month or so due to my operation, so I had them out today and gave them a wipe over and pull through with an oily cloth. All appears OK, no idea if the scope alignment has been affected. Will find out next year.DM
Microgunner
DM, I too keep all my firearms in safes, with the exceptions of the one I'm wearing and maybe a couple that I'm fondling, but out of prudence not lawful obligation. It's good to keep firearms out of the hands of criminal offenders.
asmurff
I believe several states are getting very sticky about were guns are kept, luckily mine isn't one.I have a Stack-On gun cabinet I keep my rifles, shotguns and any pistols I'm not using in, my two carry pistols are in a push button safe in my armoire. However, I keep a 1911 in my night stand drawer, a XD .45acp in a false kleenex box in the livingroom and a Beretta 92FS in the file cabinet in the office. The last 3 may seem excessive but home invasions are far to common in this area.
Microgunner
That's what I like to see. Someone who's not willing to be a victim and has taken steps to insure it.

Tal
I'm beginning to think, I need a safe. My previous house in Dallas, had a built in heavy duty gun cabinet. Cabinet was secured by 2 heavy duty Schlage Dead Bolts, once you opened decorative oak cabinet front. 1st look you wouldn't even know there was a gun cabinet behind the door. After reading this thread, I'm beginning to see the wisdom of doing something similar, or just buying a stand alone safe. Would be a shame to have my fire arms wind up in the hands of criminals. (Thinking about a regular gun cabinet, laying it horizontally on the floor, frame it in, and put oak cabinetry around it, thereby disguising it...)...So I'm curious what you guys thoughts are on securing, and how you are doing. Safes?, Cabinets?..Something else??As of present I've got my rifles and shotguns sitting in a closet, and with the exception of my carry piece, everything else sits on a coffee table next to my bed. Pistols, Ammo, everything..No... I do not have small children.I do know that the present situation is not a good one, so I'm looking for ideas.(Like Asmurff, I've got a few stashed around in strategic places as well).. asmurff
I don't know about hiding your safe but it needs to be damn near impossible to move. Otherwise thieves will just bring a dolly. My cabinet, I can't afford a safe yet, is lag bolted in 4 places into the wall studs, plus it is fastened into the concrete slab beneath it in 3 places using a power shot.I'd say if you can make it look like part of the house I'd go for it. bdavison
On my belt. And i have specially designed and built furniture that hides and protects. Im not big on safes unless well hidden. They are like magnets for thieves, and they will utterly destroy your house to get them open. There are companies out there that will build you custom furniture that there is no way you would ever expect armament to be inside them...even to the point where close inspection wont reveal their hidden secrets. Kinda like a puzzle box, but easy to get to if you know how.
Tal
Excellent ideas guys...Thanks for your input.Am going to do a little more research, but I'm leaning toward the concealed safe thing, and making damn sure the safe's tied down, if they figure it out.. I am still toying with getting one on-line.

Humidity, however, with wooden furniture can be an issue. Speedy recovery Mr. Mouse!
