techmike Posted May 24, 2010 Report Posted May 24, 2010 Went to the range last Thursday, and have determined that I don't really like to shoot 30-06 anymore. I used to be able to put several hundred rounds downrange, now my shoulder complains after 24. So after a lot of thought, and a few adult beverages, have put the Garand up for trade. Might have a taker - offer is an AR platform, Stag upper/Sabre Defense lower. Waiting for pics.TM
imschur Posted May 24, 2010 Report Posted May 24, 2010 How about a DPMS .30, might be a little easier on the body. The cost has come waaaaaaay down on them
Sam 8 Posted May 26, 2010 Report Posted May 26, 2010 I am a newbie here Mike and you don't know me from a hot rock. That said, I gotta be the voice crying in the wilderness, and say I don't think I could part with a rifle like that, (a Garand), even if it wasn't going to be a daily or weekly shooter, or if I only put 50 rounds or so a year through it. There are some firearms that are just to cool to let go of, and in my view, that there unit is one of them.Humbly;S-8
techmike Posted May 26, 2010 Author Report Posted May 26, 2010 HiYa Sam 8 - And that's a Roger..... but, I have been thinning out the gun lockers the past year. Ever since I got my Colt M-4, I was remembering how much fun smaller calibers are to shoot. And I think the Garand was meant to be used, not be a safe queen. And I get a new fun gun to play with. .223 is a lot cheaper to reload than 30-06. All that said, I will miss it, but I only paid $250 for it.TM :thumb:
Sam 8 Posted May 26, 2010 Report Posted May 26, 2010 I read you loud and clear, and agree on the small caliber fun shooting point, heck I just ordered a new high powered Air rifle, LOL.I love the classics and just had to speak up. Have fun with the .223, I love mine.
techmike Posted May 28, 2010 Author Report Posted May 28, 2010 What kind of air gun? I have a Gammo Whisper, which was disappointing out of the box - I couldn't tell if the "silencer" worked because the spring twanged too much... I installed the gas piston upgrade in order to eliminate the twang, and it increased the power so much that it blew the baffles out of the "silencer". It is very accurate and hard hitting, I have a Bushnell circle plex scope with a tac light and laser mounted on it. I knocked a coon out of a back yard tree with it.TMPS - Traded the Garand today - will test fire the AR15 Friday! :beer:TM
asmurff Posted May 28, 2010 Report Posted May 28, 2010 I'd say that is like getting a new wife, but new guns are easier to break-in >:D
Microgunner Posted May 28, 2010 Report Posted May 28, 2010 I'd say that is like getting a new wife, but new guns are easier to break-in >:DAnd they don't go psycho when you fondle another gun. :thumb:
Sam 8 Posted May 29, 2010 Report Posted May 29, 2010 Have fun with the AR Mike!I ordered a Gamo Hunter Extreme.Cheapest by far was Amazon, beleive it or not. they had it for under $350.I am already researching tuners for it.
techmike Posted May 29, 2010 Author Report Posted May 29, 2010 Have fun with the AR Mike!I ordered a Gamo Hunter Extreme.Cheapest by far was Amazon, beleive it or not. they had it for under $350.I am already researching tuners for it.Here is a good place to start. There is a sticky on that page for tuners. I bought a cd online that walked me through disassembly, basic tuning, ect. Was enough for me to install the gas piston.Th AR is sweet! Went to the range today and ran a quick 40 rounds thru it. I will need to scope it, as with my tri-focals the front sight is just a vertical blur, but I was able to get hits in the black at 100 with the iron sights. Looking at a Leatherwood CMR scope. TM
imschur Posted May 29, 2010 Report Posted May 29, 2010 I have a sweet RWS pellet pistol. Awesome on the AR, you know Im a fan :thumb:
techmike Posted May 29, 2010 Author Report Posted May 29, 2010 I have a sweet RWS pellet pistol. Awesome on the AR, you know Im a fan :thumb:Well, this is my first AR - had never fired a .223 until today. Cabelas has a bunch of steel cased, Russian .223 for $.20 a round. Until I get reloading components that will do. :auto:TMPS - Here is the Leatherwood retical.
imschur Posted May 29, 2010 Report Posted May 29, 2010 some of that type of ammo will make a mess of your gun with the lacquer on the cases and accuracy can bite the weenie.I mostly buy the various lake city stuff here or PMC hereThey shoot well with no side effects.
techmike Posted May 29, 2010 Author Report Posted May 29, 2010 This stuff doesn't have lacquer - it's teflon coated. But it is only temporary - I have dies and components on order.TM
imschur Posted May 29, 2010 Report Posted May 29, 2010 Excellent then :thumb: Are primers finally available again?
techmike Posted May 29, 2010 Author Report Posted May 29, 2010 Midway has em, but I have a couple K in stock I need to use up.TM
