imschur
Im on my second mower with this engine and its pissing me off. The first mower I left out front to be stolen and the new one is headed in that direction too.I quick google search shown many owners with similar frustration. These engines are very popular on lawn mowers and the common problem users experience is that while the mower starts first pull it will get into the conditions where it wont stay running, stalls for no reason or runs with the engine constantly revving up and down. The problem will often disappear and reappear. The general web consensus is dirty carb or bad plug. Well my new mower was doing it on about the 3rd use.Im done....Does anyone know of any 2 cycle mowers being produced?
rodent.22
If you want a 2 cycle, look for a Tecumseh, however since lawnmowers now fall under the clean air act regs, I doubt you will find a 2 cycle since oil has to be mixed with the gasoline. Chain saw engines are so small I don't think they are covered. I go to WalMart every 2-3 years, buy a cheap push high wheeler,(Briggs & Stratton engine)$150.00 or so on sale..... When it craps out I dump it. I can buy 2-3 Cheapies for what a Honda costs, the Hondas have the same problems anyway....
imschur
My last two mowers were nearly identical. The first was a Husqvarna which I believe cost me $299 the current is a Troy Bilt that was the same price. The funny thing is the mowers are nearly Identical in every way. Thanks, I didnt know lawnmowers had gotten regulated. Of course my lawn is about 25x25 and i could probably get one of those old fashioned rotary jobs, a reel mower
rodent.22
I gotta tell ya big guy my wife and I were ''green'' back in the early seventies, we bought one of those reel jobs, our duplex had almost NO area of grass. That damned reel mower almost killed me, if you get one get a HEAVY one. A light one will jam on every little clump of grass and believe you me- your colon and assorted parts will be up between your ears with any attached items also. You'll park it out by the road with a $50.00 bill tied to it..... I know from BITTER experience.

techmike
Don't get me started on lawn mower regulation.... Grrrrrrrr. You think guns are regulated???? Do any of you remember when we were young, the throttle control on a mower actually increased the RPMs of a mower? There wasn't the stupid kill switch on the handle? Well, thanks to the Consumer Report Magazine, and large numbers of stupid Americans, (now with less than ten fingers and or toes), the tip speed of lawnmower blades is federally regulated. They all now have governors to keep the speed low, so when stupid people stick their hand(s) inside the mower while it is running, it doesn't sever digits. I am so sick of protecting stupid people! Anyway, I try to stay away from "easy start" engines. Basically, the cams in those engines don't allow the valves to close all the way, hence the "easy start". Of course, you suffer a big power loss and burn more gas. Get one with an electric or battery start. I prefer Briggs and Stratton over Tecumseh, they are a bit easier to work on. MTD is an OK brand for low to medium cost push mowers. I have a 1991 Crafstman lawn tractor that runs great - rebuilt the carb & mower deck last year. Going to give it a low rider paint job this year! (two - tone paint) ;DTM

rodent.22
I have a 22.5 horse Craftsman tractor with a 52'' deck. Twin cylinder Kohler, 5 speed dual range tranny I bought new in 1995. I built a box blade for dragging my gravel driveway. My buddy moved to Arizona last year and sold me his Craftsman tractor 20 hp twin cylinder Kohler with 46'' deck for $500.00. I use it to mow with, and the MTD push mower to trim with....He threw the dump trailer in for free.

asmurff
While I only have a small electric mower my grass area is less 10 X 12, it do have a motorized wheel barrow. It allows me to get lots done with a bum heart I otherwise have to hire someone to do.It will move 500 pounds on level ground and 300 pounds on up to 20% incline. Sam 8
Sounds like you might be in Ca., where the nazis at CARB have regulated these things down to zero emissions, the problem is they no longer run. What you are describing sounds like a lean surge, which means they have the engine tuned to run on the ragged edge of lean, no fuel means clean. You need to get creative about sourcing a 48-state solution.Or maybe the carb could be "rebuilt" using other parts.... >:D
imschur
Im in Ct and surging is exactly how I describe it. In fact my snowblower does it as well

rodent.22
Drew I bought this Troy-Bilt TB 110 21'' push mower, Briggs and Stratton 625 Quantum engine. This thing runs smooth as silk, doesn't bog, rear bags great, and starts 1st pull. $199.95 list at Lowes, the manager cut me a $50.00 dollar deal, $150.00 was just right. Had it a month now, no surprises. This is my summer for lawn equipment. LOL
