Microgunner
My 2007 Ford Escape 3.0 V6 check engine light has come on. Rough idle and noticeable misfire after about 15 miles of driving. After it rests for a day it runs well (even though the CEL is on) for about another 15 miles then starts running rough again. Autozone computer said cylinder #4 misfire. Damn thing is 4000 miles out of warranty. Could be coil over plug, could be fuel injector, could be spark plug, could be ?. Any mechanics out there that might have any ideas? imschur
Does it have injectors that you can get to easily? They sure can do what you describe. I had an identical issue with our last 4 runner.
tatumColtM16bryan
had this happen on my lady's corrolla. went to auto zone and got the same read off the scan computer. replaced the distributor wires and cleaned the plugs and have had no trouble for the last 10k miles. hope that helps some. ours was a $50 fix
rodent.22
Back long ago with a separate coil and points ignition system a coil could heat up and start acting up as you describe. Shut the car down, let the coil cool down and it would run great until it was started and heated up again.
Microgunner
I've decided what I'll do is switch the coil pack between cylinders #4 & #5 and go back to Autozone for another computer check. If the computer reads cylinder #5 misfire I'll know it is the coil pack, if it still reads cylinder #4 misfire I'll know it's not the coil pack and probably the fuel injector and buy the appropriate parts at that time. I hope it's the coil pack because the intake manifold has to come off to change a fuel injector.

Jrod77
have you looked at the spark plug
Microgunner
Not yet but I don't even have a socket to get that goofy Ford long shaft spark plug out.
Microgunner
Switched coils between cylinders #4 & #5 and had Auto Zone recheck. Still cylinder #4 misfire so this rules out the faulty coil over plug. The computer also read lean condition on cylinder #4 so this pretty much means it's the fuel injector. They didn't have one in stock so I had them order one. I found a couple videos on line of the intake manifold removal on a V6 Escape and it doesn't look too complicated. I'll give it a go this weekend.Wish me luck.

Microgunner
Thanks. I hope this solves the problem because in the meantime I'm driving the Chevy 3500 dually with a big block. Fuel economy wasn't on the list of priorities when this truck was designed, and I drive 80 miles a day, minimum. But man, the damn thing could pull a house. Get outta my way! Microgunner
My brother and I worked on my Escape this weekend with complete success. Changed #4 fuel injector and since you must remove the intake manifold to change the back (3) spark plugs I took the opportunity to change the spark plugs as well (although they didn't need it).Runs like new once again and it wasn't too hard to do. asmurff
That is good to hear. On newer vehicle with all the electronics any time it doesn't run right you really worry about what is wrong and how much it will cost.
