imschur Posted November 27, 2011 Report Posted November 27, 2011 Girl that sit's diagonally across from me at the office despised guns. She has two kids, one of each variety. A few years ago her parents began building a cabin in Vermont. Eventually the parents moved to the cabin. I recal her horror learning that her father had bought a gun. Eventually she came to understand that he needed it for "protection from bears". Well on brakes from school and weekends the kids began spending time with the grand parents fishing and yes shooting the rifle. Now fast forward two years later mom gets a call from ther school that the son was talking about going shooting. (thats another discussion) I shocked to hear her defending the boy as well as the right to own guns. After she got off the phone she called her son and explained he did nothing wrong and wasnt in trouble. Needless to say I was floored. Now heres the kicker Wednesday she left work to start the holiday weekend early. I noticed her computer wallpaper was her baby girl (under 10) holding a 30-06 derr rifle smiling ear to ear.It warmed my heart.
Tal Posted November 27, 2011 Report Posted November 27, 2011 It's amazing how one incident can change your perception...My wife despised my guns, and made me keep em' locked up when we 1st got married. (30 some odd years ago)..Then she came home and found a guy in the house, with a knife who told her to drop the groceries bitch, and where's the money? She ran back out the front door, and I had to immediately leave work, come home and buy her a S&W 38 special so she could carry it in her purse.
asmurff Posted November 27, 2011 Report Posted November 27, 2011 My mother greatly dislikes guns without a legimate reason. She knows better than to lecture me about them, but would never allow me to bring one into her house. Hey her house still her rules, I can live with it, besides my parents live in New Jersey.
Madhouse Posted November 29, 2011 Report Posted November 29, 2011 schur, tal, those are awesome tales of people gaining a sensible perspective. My wife is not fond of guns. When I bought my first one we battled, like knock-down drag-out, crying, etc. But I made my case and she accepts them now just because I forced it. If she had her way, there would not be a gun in this house. It's sad really, I cannot convince her at all. And every male friend we have has at least one or two guns, and some friends who are beyond me in their collecting. She still will not buy off on accepting them.
imschur Posted November 29, 2011 Author Report Posted November 29, 2011 My old lady comes from a shooting family. We were good to go from the start.
Madhouse Posted November 29, 2011 Report Posted November 29, 2011 I would love nothing more. We could have another common interest, I could buy lots more guns! Seriously though, and most importantly, I would like for her to be able to defend herself rather than rely on me. I'm not always around.
imschur Posted November 29, 2011 Author Report Posted November 29, 2011 Im not sure mine would grab a gun. She relies on Toby
Tal Posted November 29, 2011 Report Posted November 29, 2011 We keep 2 guns loaded and in handy reach when we go to bed. I'm a little nervous to make a sudden move to hit the john at 2:00 AM..Don't want to let her get the drop on you...
jasonvue2003 Posted December 30, 2011 Report Posted December 30, 2011 not married so hopefully future wife loves guns too, but i live by this sayingRATHER HAVE ONE AND NOT NEED IT THAN NOT HAVE ONE AND NEED IT
Microgunner Posted December 30, 2011 Report Posted December 30, 2011 Firearms acceptance was a prerequisite for both my wives and my current girlfriend of 10 years.
asmurff Posted December 31, 2011 Report Posted December 31, 2011 My wife like guns not to the extent I do, but she can't get in much range time on her XD .45 or LC9 because she has problems with her knees and now hips. The gun club is typical high desert open land, not conducive to long standing when you have those problems. Maybe after her hip heals up completely which can take a year she'll be able to do more. She wanted a crossbow for Christmas so I got her one.
