I love what people say in gun shops

A guy came in a little while ago to look at 9mm pistols and brought his knowledgeable buddy for guidance. Among the pistols he looked at was a beautiful 1972 Browning P35. I stated it was designed by who many consider the greatest gun designer to ever live, John M. Browning. The buddy pipes up that he'd have to disagree. I asked who he thought was better and he said Samuel Colt. I asked why and he said because Sam Colt designed the Colt 1911 .45. I couldn't help but giggle. Lost that sale after correcting him.

On another day this week a man comes in and after talking awhile he gets around to telling me about his pocket gun. I asked to take a look. It was a cheap Cobra Enterprises.38spl. Derringer. He explained how he carried it when shark fishing and would drop a couple.357 mags into it to dispatch the shark. I decided not to contradict him and lose a possible sale. But he obviously doesn't shoot .357s through it or shark fish.

I frequent one of those gun stores were regular customers are encouraged to come hangout, the coffee is always on and it isn't uncommon for someone to have brought donuts or bagels in. So I get to ocassionally hear some of these great statements. After then person leaves there is usually a lively discussion  >:D

I think the only time I have heard anything that really stood out as funny or even ignorant is when a younger guy started talking about how he filed "this" down and bent "that," and made his AK full auto.

When he left, the off duty game warden made sure to write down his plates and get his info from the shop owner  ;D

One thing that does bother me is going into a shop and getting "schooled."  It has happened more than once when I mentioned AR15s or Weapons Qualification (anything remotely "military") that I'll get 1-3 retired military start trying to school me about firearms and sometimes simply remind me that I am not a soldier.

This is not helpful information or interesting conversation, which I do genuinely value; this is condescending, pointless, "you can never understand firearms (or anything) unless you serve a tour of duty," kind of gang bang.

Then god forbid you get like 3 or more of them; Guess what- being able to spit out abbreviated acronyms and bombarding me with obscure references to foreign conflicts does not earn my respect, it doesn't even confuse me like a typical civilian (I have military, first response, civilian LE, and militia experiences; though no tours).  This kind of behavior just makes me sad for the guys who are trying to make themselves seem bigger than they are.  Don't get me wrong, I have more respect for anyone who would trade their lives for their countrymen, but these kind of guys remind me of the kids in high school that would stay in their own little gang and chastise anyone outside that group.

When the salesperson referred to the State Guard (to whom I am reenlisting) as "weekend warriors,"  I took my business elsewhere.

I'd like (pay money) to see him call the MCPO of 2nd BN a "weekend warrior."

I hear that highly decorated, retired Master Chiefs love that sort of thing  ::)

Mr.Jones I totally agree with you on the retired military.  I am former member of the USN and work for the Marine Corps as a Communications Technical Expert for II MEF.  I have dealt with this type of BS in many places including the local Walmart.  Where a retired recon Gsgt wants to talk to me about how you have had to be in recon to know how to use an M16.  I looked at him like man you need to get a grip.  He talked trash about the 10/22 I was trying to purchase. He was the sales person in sporting goods. Needless to say he lost a sale.  What gives these guys the right to talk smack about anything.  I served just like they did and I have been in the field with these guys teaching them the latest and greatest communications that the US Gov as saw fit to purchase.  I hear this mess at the gun shops and the range at times.  I just laugh at them and start an argument and wall off.  What is really bad is when the Marine and Army guys go at each other over the same stuff.  Last I checked we all have been stood duty and risked our lives assuming the same risk.  I have guys that I taught a week before they went to Iraq that did not come back after they deployed. One was killed three weeks later.  We have all took the oath and no where in it does it say you are better than the next man who risked his life.

"Weekend Warrior" hmmm  Ohio National Guard lost almost 30 people from that unit.  When duty called they were on that line with pride.

I dont mean to drag this out or go off topic but it just pisses me off.

Anyway I love my 10/22 and this site.HAPPY SHOOTING GUYS

Keith I love my 10/22 also and when people call it an Elmer Fudd gun I just smile.  BTW Wal-Mart attracts strange people to their gun area, the salesman/manager in my local one is such an idiot I won't even go in there anymore. I've heard him tell a guy that asked for .45GAP, at the .45acp would work  ???
